Diversity and advocacy are important aspects of the school counseling profession. I strive to be a culturally-competent professional, and feel that my practice has been strongly influenced by the experiences I have had with a wide variety of people. On a personal level, I have gained a thorough knowledge of immigrant issues and Central American culture through living with my partner, who is a native of Honduras. Raising our daughter in a bilingual, cross-cultural home is a parallel process to what I strive to do in my professional practice. I attempt to integrate what I currently know about the world with an undying curiosity to learn more. Educating others about issues of power, oppression, and inequality was at the heart of my decision to enter the helping professions, and continues to be a key component to what I feel is best practice for school counselors.
