Laura Travis

As an artist, Laura walks between the worlds of fine and folk art, utilizing traditional iconography in some very contemporary contexts. The inspiration for her work comes from the Celtic traditions in music, dance and the visual arts which she has studied extensively for more than twenty years. She works primarily in limestone, soapstone, and slate. Recent large scale projects involve public art pieces in South Kingstown, Rhode Island; she’s also shown her work in Providence, Maryland, Toronto, Worcester and New Bedford. She is an art teacher at Hope Arts High School, holds an MFA in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and works in a post and beam studio a stone's throw from the ocean in Rhode Island

Laura Travis is a founding member of AnDroichead/The Bridge, an international artists' group working to present and promote high standards in contemporary Celtic design. Find out more about the activities of The Bridge.

Below is the video by Richard Goulis that was made in 2011 to document my work as part of the Networks RI project. I'm delighted to be part of it!
