The CROSS-HATCHING Technique:
Cross-hatching involves the use of overlapping lines to create different values. Placing lines closer together and overlapping lines in more directions creates darker values. Some artists prefer to work with parallel overlapping lines, while others prefer to approach cross-hatching as overlapping squiggly lines:

The STIPPLING Technique:
Stippling involves the use of dots to create different values and value gradients. Placing dots closer together creates darker values and, conversely, placing dots further apart creates lighter values.

Project:
Create works of art that incorporate any magazine photograph (or photographs) with the medium of Pen & Ink. The Pen & Ink must include at least 40% of the surface area, and represent a major part of the work. Cross-hatching, parallel lines or stippling techniques may be used. This project offers the student an opportunity to study and translate the colors and values of photographs into Pen & Ink values. Preview the Pen & Ink and Collage PowerPoint Tutorial for examples and procedures.   Students are to complete any two (2) of the four (4) project options listed below:

Option 1:
Cut objects from magazine photos and arrange them together to create an interesting composition. Using the technique of cross-hatching, parallel lines or stippling, add to the composition. Sometimes the photos help suggest other forms for the artist to utilize in Pen & Ink.

Option 2:
Create a project that is done mostly in Pen & Ink, but also includes a few areas cut from the photograph used as the basis for the drawing.
