Josiah Wedgwood II (1769-1843)—"Uncle Jos"— brother of Darwin's mother and master potter. He was also the father of Emma, Darwin's wife and thus first cousin. Uncle Jos convinced Darwin's father, Robert, who initially strongly objected to his son's participating in the Beagle voyage, that “the pursuit of natural history, although certainly not professional, very suitable for a clergyman.” Emma inherited a substantial sum from her father, which combined with Darwin's family money, allowed him to pursue his scientific interest without having to worry about finances.
