2nd Beagle Voyage, 1831-1836. The chief purpose of the voyage was to survey the coasts of eastern South America, locating precisely their geographic position on marine charts as well as determine souces of fresh water, food, wood, and other supplies necessary for the British Imperial fleet. FitzRoy also wanted to return four natives from Tierra del Fuego whom he had brought back to England to educate—both in language and religion—and who, he hoped , would start a settlement together with a young English missionary.
