Joseph Hooker (1817-1911) was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens. He worked on the taxonomy and biogeography of plants. He was a good friend, confidant, and loyal supporter of Darwin's developing theory. It was Hooker, along with Charles Lyell, who insisted that Darwin must publish his theory before Wallace or others scooped him.
