This portrait of Darwin was taken in 1881, the year before he died. Between 1876 and 1882, the last year of his life, he wrote his autobiography, originally intended for his children. He ended the work with his own modest self-assessment that attributed his success mostly to "the love of science, unbounded patience in long reflecting over any subject, industry in observing and collecting facts, and a fair share of invention as well as of common sense."
