Emma Darwin (1808-1896) at the time of her marriage to Charles in 1839. She was a typical Victorian woman of her era: an accomplished pianist, religious, and devoted wife and mother (ten children!). She was Darwin's first cousin and daughter of Josiah Wedgwood II from whom she inherited a substantial sum of money that, combined with Darwin's family wealth, allowed him to work full time on the "species question" and other research, free of finanacial concerns. Emma survived Charles by 14 years.
