The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning is based upon assumptions from three learning theorys:  Dual Coding, Limited Capacity, and Active Processing.

Assumption #1

Dual Coding:  The working memory has both auditory and visual working channels.

Assumption #2

Limited Capacity:  Based on Cognitive Load Theory, each sub system of working memory has a limited capacity.

Assumption #3

Active Processing:  The learner constructs meaningful knowledge when they select, organize, and integrate new information with prior learning.
