How Does a Photo Become Iconic?

Many photographers have captured images that have transcended time and become recognizable upon first view. The soldier kissing the nurse in Times Square, the lynching and hanging of two African American men in the 1930's, the family of migrant workers during the Great Depression. All of these photos, and many more, have been dubbed "iconic" and have become intertwined with the history and culture of society. How did they get to be this way? Why are they so famous and remembered?

This multimedia project will delve into these questions through researching and discovering the fascinating story behind photographer Kevin Carter's 1993 photo "Sudanese Girl and Vulture".

Little did Carter know that when he took this photo, it would change his life and the lives of many others forever. The impact it had transcended the moment that the camera flashed and has continued throughout the years. So take a look around and discover how this photo has transcended the moment it was captured and become iconic.
