Humanitas - What is it?

Definition:

The Latin Word Humanitas has many meanings, mainly: kindness, culture, refinement.

Humanitas is a Latin word created by Cicero to describe a good man, one who is educated in literary culture (esp. the classics) and is therefore civilized**.

 

The Roman concept of humanitas described the humane** virtues that were expected from educated people.

 

**A humane person is a Humanist. A humanist or humane person has a strong interest in or concern for human welfare, values, and dignity.  A humanist is also known as a classical scholar.

 

**Civilized=having an advanced or humane culture, society, etc.; polite; well-bred; refined.


Answer these questions:

1. What do you wish for this school year? (must be related to school and positive/ inspirational)?

2. What is Humanitas? (think connecting of different subjects, along a theme)

3. What is the Humanitas philosophy? (think connectivity, making connections)

4. How is a Humanitas school different than other schools? (teachers plan together...)

5. What would be a good quotation to sum up the Humanitas philosophy? or to represent our Humanitas school? (something about making connections, learning at a high level)

6. What would be a good symbol or logo for our Humanitas school? Think connectivity. Think humanity. Also, think Art & Technology.
