October 2008

So many fantastic things to report.  Ink has started.  Rise & Read has started.  Great, big ol' groups at both.  Our football team is winning.  NECAPS are going well.  Every day, I am excited to come to work.

My favorite thing so far this year was attending the Junkyard Ghost Revival.  A huge group of us (over thirty!) walked down to Antonio's, grabbed some pizza, and then hiked down to Brown to stand in line.  It was a crazy night of slam with Derrick Brown, Anis Mojgani, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, and Buddy Wakefield.  The posse from Hope was AMAZING.  The poets were AMAZING.  It was a truly inspirational night.

I have been very busy updating the site!  Specifically, I have fallen in love with the video option on my camera that allows me to be sneaky and video tape performances while it looks like I'm simply waiting to take a photograph.

In addition to the awesome performance of a section of the prologue from Romeo & Juliet, there are many new videos posted in the "Gallery of Student Work" section.  The mythology section has photos and videos, and there are new RISD visits with photos.

Also, the sophomore creative writing class participated in the Poetry Out Loud contest.  There are videos from the school and state competition.  Ariel Russell represented Hope Arts and did an AMAZING job.  She did so well, in fact, that she came in fifth place in the state.  Congratulations Ariel!

Happy New Year!

On a positive note, my sophomores wrote over 200,000 words collectively during NaNoWriMo.   We've been busy editing during December.  Keep a look out for our books at the end of the month.

On a much sadder note, the laptops where we typed our masterpieces were stolen a few days before break from Mrs. Weigand's room.  All of her students, Mrs. Weigand, my students, and I am very saddened by this turn of events and the lack of leads we have so far despite the fact that we can see the culprits on camera.

At this point, we are beginning to look for donations from the committee.  If you would like to donate to our cause to replenish our Mac laptops so that the digital media students can continue their work, we would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for your support, and have a lovely 2008!

"Two-word poems" have been linked under my tenth grade gallery of student work.  They are fantastic.  More inspirational links are going up every day, highlighting many of the RI Arts Passport participants.  The school year is just getting going, and I'm very excited!

I, along with Ms. Weigand, Ms. Hamlin, Ms. Kline, and Ms. Auxier, will be participating in the RI Arts Passport program this year.  It is really exciting and will provide a lot of great opportunities to our students.  To learn more, look under the "helpful and inspirational links" section.

Welcome back!  It was a pleasure seeing new faces today and reconnection with so many fantastic students.  I’m looking forward to meeting all of my students in the upcoming days.  We have a new schedule this year for Wednesdays—instead of four short periods, we will have two, regular-length classes in addition to advisory.  We will rotate which classes we have every week.  I will try to photograph the schedule and the T/M day calendar this week and get it up on this site.  I’m looking forward to a great year at Hope Arts High School.

August 17, 2007

I finally made the time to put up more student work!  Check out the journal section to read some really amazing pieces about fear.

Also, tomorrow August 18, there will be a welcome back to school BBQ at Hope High School from 10am to 1pm.  Be sure to come and join us!

Adopt our classroom!  I'm trying to raise enough money to buy a class set of Neos--they're super cool word processors that we can use to write wherever we want.

I've been working hard!  Check out the literary links, the imagery exercise in the student gallery, and the narrative portraits.  My biography is up, and I'm working hard on updating all the major assignments for those who missed them.  Keep tuned.
