Metalsmithing
for Educators
This course introduced metal smithing as a tool for student
learning and creativity.
Participants learned basic to advanced soldering, rivioting, and
chain making skills.
Participants saw and developed lesson plans to use in their
classroom that will introduce these skills in a sequential and
structured manner.
Participants produced projects that employ the methods, tools, and
processes practiced throughout the course.
Working through these projects in the manner proscribed for the class will help educators to understand issues faced by the students, in addition to teaching them how to properly use equipment in the art room. Techniques covered in the class are directly related to skills sought for by art and design colleges for majors that require 3-D design. Majors could include industrial design, furniture design, and fashion.
