WHY STUDY DARWIN?
The purpose of this one term/semester, general education class is to introduce students to the content and practice of science by examining the life and chief work of a major figure in the history of science. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) is especially suitable because his work has had major impact not only on biology and geology, but also on other disciplines including the social sciences, philosophy, and religion. Moreover, the real (not the apochryphal) Charles Darwin has particular appeal for the young in heart of all ages, because he dropped out of the University of Edinburgh, transferred to Cambridge University where he was an indifferent student, was an enigma to his overbearing father, and was uncertain about his future career.
