Rev. John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861), professor of botany and clergyman at Cambridge. Henslow was Darwin’s mentor in natural history who would put him up for the position of naturalist on the Beagle voyage. It was not at all unusual for ordained clergymen in those days to pursue natural history, viewing it merely as God's work fully compatible with God's word, i.e., biblical scripture.
