This was Charles and Emma's first home in London where they lived for three years (1839-1842) until the purchase of their home at Down in Kent. The basic tenets of Darwin’s theory were formulated here. This building was destroyed much later in the WW II Blitz, but is today commemorated by a plaque on its replacement.
