How did a
believing Christian, mediocre university student, and later
chronically ill, stay-at-home English gentleman become the
revolutionary scientist who not only turned biology on its head,
but also philosophy and social science? This slide show will
provide a short "biopict" of Charles Darwin, starting with his
family origins, his haphazard university education, the five-year
voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, and his subsequent lying relatively low
for the next 23 years until the forced publication of On the
Origin of Species. It will also outline the simple, but
powerful, argument for Darwin’s “descent with modification”
(today’s “evolution”) that formed the backbone of his book. (Darwin
is shown here at age 47, three years before publication of the
Origin.)
