Whoo hoo! ... Kudos to my 11th grade photo student, Benito Rojas!!!
It was announced Saturday (Mar 20) that he is a Grand Finalist in the Music Center's Spotlight Awards!!!
This is a huge honor for our school and our district!!! I believe this may be the first time LAUSD has ever won the Grand Finalist award in photography, at least for many, many years!
FYI, the exhibition with the photos of Benito and our other semi-finalist in photoraphy, Aaron Alvarado, are on view until April 17 at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.
On April 24th he will be honored, along with a hand full of other HS students, in a gala ceremony at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and will be awarded a cash scholarship of at least $4,000 (plus a $500 summer scholarship and $100 cash)!!!

Also, big kudos to
Maddy Leeser!!!
She was chosen for a Gold Key Award
at the national level by Scholastic Arts!
She will be one of about 500 of the nation's most creative and accomplished teenage artists invited to New York City to receive top honors from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in a ceremony at CARNEGIE HALL on June 9, 2010! Also, the national gold winners will be exhibited in NYC's Courtyard Gallery. She's in good company. Some past winners: Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon:

Kudos also to all our Visual Arts Academy students who were a very strong presence in the awards this year. They entered 100+ artworks (far more but I lost count!) and won 24 awards! At the recent LA ceremony, as our school name was announced 24 times, the presenters commented, "Wow, this must be a great art school, we keep hearing it get so many awards." We were the only school that received such a comment. -

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the oldest, longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for student achievement in the visual arts and creative writing in the United States. Open to students in 7th through 12th grades from public, private and parochial schools throughout the U.S., the Scholastic Awards are also the largest source of scholarship funding for teenage artists and writers.
