Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

In late April, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum celebrated the opening of the Target National Design Education Center, a new space located on the ground floor of the Museum featuring a 100-seat lecture room, design studio, and resource library.

Using these new resources, design students of all ages will be able to attend an increased number of on-site lectures, panels, master classes, and hands-on workshops, advancing Cooper-Hewitt's mission to engage the public in the design process. Additionally, all facilities within the Center are equipped with state-of-the-art data capture technology, allowing programs to be documented and made available nationwide via the web.

On Thursday, April 27, Cooper-Hewitt will commemorated the grand opening of the Target National Design Education Center with a design extravaganza for high school students. The Museum invited 90 teenagers from New York-area schools and 12 students who will be flown in from other parts of the country to participate in the event. Our very own Asanam Nuth of the Technology Community was among the chosen 12!

During the afternoon, teens had the opportunity to:

Make their mark on the Graffiti Design Mural

Speak their mind in the "Design is..." Truth Booth

Explore career opportunities with working designers from MTV and Gensler

Design a T-shirt for possible sale through Target

The event also included an inspirational keynote lecture by Marc Ecko, the visionary behind several of today's most respected youth lifestyle brands including *ecko unltd. apparel, Complex magazine, and the recently launched "Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure" videogame.

As part of their trip to New York, the 12 out-of-state design students received a private tour of the MTV Studios on Friday, April 28th, followed by a luncheon in their honor where they had the opportunity to share their portfolios with design professionals.
