SURVING FRESHMAN ENGLISH AND FRESHMAN YEAR: ADVICE FROM PREVIOUS FRESHMEN ON . . .

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND:

*The school is huge, but basically it’s just a stack of interconnected hallways with some buildings surrounding it. Good luck finding any of your classes the first two days!

THE WEBSITE:

*The online forum is totally fun.

*Do the extra credit on the website!!!!!

*Check the website for new extra-credit opportunities.

HOMEWORK:

*The homework in this class actually helps your grade, so do it.

FLASHCARDS:

*Make flash cards because they help you study and you get 10 extra points on your *tests! It’s helpful!!! Those points really make a difference!

SOCIAL INTERACTIONS:

*Watch out if you want to be a class clown. Some people may think you’re annoying, not funny.

*Make friends Don’t just stay in one group.

*Don’t be afraid to express yourself.

*Be a leader, not a follower.

*Upperclassmen are not scary at all. They just look like it because they’re bigger. Most just think we’re “cute.”

*Be a friendly person; get to know others, know your teachers and you’ll be alright.

WORK HABITS

*The only difference from middle school is you have more responsibility, whether it’s homework or taking time to understand work on your own. Your maturity level must come up as well. Teachers won’t tolerate immature behavior. The days may seem long, but the year really flies by.

*Learn how to be prepared and organized so you can find stuff when you have homework or papers you need to turn in.

*Do not try to be cool by slacking off on doing your work because that doesn’t make you cool. Remember one thing: “No such thing as cool.”

*Don’t blow your homework off and assume you can worm your way on by because without knowing, it can easily catch up with you.

*Do your work early! Unless you enjoy staying up until 2AM because you procrastinated, that is.

*Do your assignments (all of them), because you never know which ones will be checked.

*Always do more than you’re asked.

*Don’t throw away any papers your teachers give you. They might ask for them and sometimes they might let you use them on quiz like the notes you took. Papers with notes your teacher gave can really help at the end of the semester.

*Don’t slack off at all because every grade in high school counts. Try to make all A’s and B’s even though it’s hard. Life’s short and your grades depend on your future. You want to make sure you get in to a good college.

*High school is not a game. Either work hard or get out, but make up your mind early on and don’t waste anyone’s time.

FOLLOWING THE RULES

*Follow the dress code; don’t think they’ll bend the rules for you. They won’t.

*Don’t skip class/school. Missing one day is like missing a week.

*Don’t skip class because you will have work to make up and if you skip too much you will have to do credit restoration.

*Don’t talk back to teachers. That gets you nowhere.

*Don’t skip class because all you can do is sit in the bathroom hoping to not get caught.

*DON’T SKIP!!! You’ll get behind on school work and lost your teachers’ trust. It’s hard to catch back up.

*Make sure your phone is off or on silent because teachers will take it from you.

*Avoid being late to class at all costs. Tardies tend to stack up, and eventually you’ll get detention.

*Do not rely on plagiarism to solve any problems.
